We believe great design and sustainability can make our planet a better place to live. We design sustainable food systems to solve problems, create more and use less. We work with entrepreneurs, schools, businesses, and community groups to design food production systems, processes and new foods that can be scaled from a bench-scale trial to world-wide impact.

From harvesting a food source to closing the loop on food waste we believe that design is the single most effective way of solving sustainability challenges. We design sustainable food systems that put natural and healthier foods into our homes and places of work. We experiment with and design natural, circular systems that are resilient and productive.

As the world urbanises we see our cities as places with opportunity, to experiment and develop food systems that make people and spaces healthier. We work to educate and inspire people and communities to co-design food systems that work for everyone and that produce more than they consume; reducing our food mileage and carbon footprints.

Circularity and zero waste are our guiding principles. We are not afraid to be bold, radical and progressive in how we experiment with design, architecture or the science of circular systems. Not only are these optimal for food production they are also pioneering in terms of value. Our team of agricultural mavericks have been designing natural systems for 20+ years.

"Galloping consumption and linear systems are a major threat to our ecological and economic health. We work with groups and individuals to make a difference through education, design-led research and collaborative co-creation projects"

Green Lab is an open innovation lab and ecosystem for individuals and organisations to design sustainable solutions to complex urban food, water and waste challenges. Encouraging creativity, collaboration, experimentation and play, it incubates ideas that make food systems more productive and resilient, and that can put more natural and healthy food on our tables.

We take the best from permaculture thinking, from small scale production, from experimentation, and from science and technology and design productive food systems that make the world a better place. We believe in experimentation and play; we believe in challenging what people do today; we believe that we can design away our problems; we believe in building human-scale systems.

We have built a workspace that encourages creativity and collaboration and we are filling it with food entrepreneurs and thinkers that want to build better systems. We focus on insects, algae, hydroponics, aquaculture and fungi.

Green Lab is a place to design beautiful solutions to complex food problems. We believe in simple design and collaboration.

We’re a passionate team of friendly people working on some of the world’s biggest challenges from a fab space in Bermondsey.

We offer affordable lab space and workspace to incubate early stage new food-based initiatives and business. Our curated residencies provide access to the Green Lab, the team and all of our network. It's a place to scale an idea beyond your proof of concept.

Event hire

We have a very vibrant event space with adjoining kitchen for hire to host events for startups, businesses and not for profits. Coupled with access to Green Lab we can even grow, farm or ferment food including: microgreens, leafy greens, insects, algae or kombucha.

We run a wide range of workshops from setting up insectariums with schools, building aquaponic systems, using technology in agriculture to full-on permaculture workshops. We also design and curate corporate strategy workshops for growing food companies.

We've a fully equipped bio-lab for research and experiments. Whether you're looking to grow mushrooms on cardboard, grow bacteria, farm insects or experiment with aquaculture. We've a creative studio for you and can help you design and conduct your research.

Green Lab has been designed and built using 100% upcycled materials salvaged from a local theatre company, decommissioned bio labs and art freight containers.

Green Lab has a sustainable design philosophy as one of our core values.
